Our Private Guided Tours

TOLEDO FULL DAY

Take a journey inside a history book

Toledo is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, a museum-city of great artistic beauty and one of the oldest and most monumental cities in Spain. Toledo is, without doubt, one of the must-see cities in Spain.

If you are looking for a powerful cultural experience, Toledo will not disappoint you. Visiting Toledo with us is like taking a journey inside a history book. What our travelers enjoy most about this tour is the way they experience a medieval atmosphere by walking through Toledo’s  ancient narrow cobblestone streets.

Toledo is a trip to the past, a town packed with history where we’ll see remains from all of the cultures which have settled on the Iberian Peninsula since ancient times. Founded on a hilltop overlooking the Tagus river 2000 years ago, Toledo was a Roman municipium, the capital of the Visigothic Kingdom, a fortress of the Emirate of Cordoba, and, in the Middle Ages, the time of its splendour, it was named “The City of the three Cultures” because Christians, Muslims and Jews coexisted there. Nowadays you can still admire the remains of bridges, palaces, churches, mosques and synagogues built during all those times.

We have been doing guided tours for more than 20 years in the amazing labyrinth of tiny streets that make up Toledo, so we know this magical town like the back of our hand. On our tour it is easy and funny to discover its rich history, monuments, hidden gems, legends, customs, and traditional handicrafts.

TOLEDO BY PRIVATE VEHICLE

Easily-reachable, the 70-kilometer journey takes only one hour from Madrid. On our way to Toledo we’ll see the south of Madrid and the farming areas in Castilla-La Mancha. Once in Toledo, we’ll spend some time sightseeing in our vehicle. From the outer edges of the river sides, the entire city opens out before us like an oversized movie screen. We’ll enjoy gorgeous views of the walled Old Town located on a rocky hill and surrounded by the Tagus river. We’ll stop at a vista point to take photos. Afterwards, our driver will take us to the Old Town in order to start our walking tour.

There are SO many cultural attractions in the old town, Toledo is a fascinating mix of different styles and cultures. On our walking tour we’ll visit:

The Cathedral. It is an amazing example of the Spanish Gothic style. Its construction lasted centuries, so inside we’ll see not only Gothic, but also great examples of Renaissance, Mudejar and Baroque styles. You will truly be touched by the energy of this historic center of worship and art.

Santo Tomé Church. There are several sites in Toledo where you can discover the works of El Greco, the famous 16th century painter who spent much of his life here in Toledo, but his masterpiece can only be seen in this tiny church. El Greco is one of the masters of Universal Art and his painting “The Burial of the Lord of Orgaz” is considered one of the greatest paintings of all times. Let us show you all the details of the painting and you’ll understand why it’s such a world-prized masterpiece.

The Jewish Quarter is one of Toledo’s most authentic neighborhoods. It retains some of its original character from when it was home to Spain’s most prominent Jewish community in the 12th and 13th centuries.

We’ll visit the Synagogue of Santa Mª La Blanca which is the oldest synagogue in Toledo, dating from the early 13th century and which was made a Catholic church in the 15th century.

These are the highlights, but If you are interested in visiting other sights of interest, do not hesitate to ask for a CUSTOMIZED TOUR.

After our walk we’ll break for lunch. The old town is peppered with small restaurants serving international and traditional food. Let us know your interests and we’ll show you the best choices for you.

Toledo is also a shopper’s paradise offering attractive handicrafts and souvenirs such as damascene ware (plates, pendants, bracelets, boxes made of steel decorated with gold and silver thread), swords, ceramics and so on. If you are interested, we can visit a workshop to see how damascene is made. And, of course, you can’t miss trying the typical marzipan, a sweet little cake made of sugar, almonds and honey. Delicious!

“Toledo is reluctantly left. It is sad to leave thinking that you will never return, that you will never see the place that strangely aroused our sympathy”. Hans Christian Andersen (He visited Toledo in 1862).
