SEGOVIA FULL DAY

Let yourself be seduced by the medieval charm and local cuisine of this beautiful Castilian town

This beautiful city, whose name means “Fortress over the Hill” was declared a WORLD HERITAGE SITE by UNESCO in 1985.

Segovia lies 56 miles to the northwest of Madrid, on the other side of the Guadarrama mountain range. It boasts a picturesque setting at the confluence of two little rivers at 3.287 feet above sea level.

Today, it is a small town with a population of 55,000, but in the 15th and 16th centuries it was one of the most important cities in Castilla.

Segovia’s main attraction is its impressive Roman Aqueduct, the largest still standing. It was built in the 1st century A.D.

Its historical quarter preserves a great number of Romanesque churches, noble residences as well as the last Gothic cathedral built in Spain. The Alcazar castle perched on a rocky outcrop, still retains its splendor as what was once the favorite residence of Castilian kings and queens.

Local cuisine in Segovia is not to be missed. Its famous “butter beans”, “roast suckling pig” and “ponche segoviano” dessert are all musts.

This enjoyable full-day tour will take us back to the Middle Ages at only 1 hour from Madrid.

SEGOVIA BY PRIVATE VEHICLE

It takes about 1h 20m to reach Segovia from Madrid by car. Along the way we will see beautiful views of the Spanish capital’s natural surroundings. We will cross the mountains through a tunnel and will enter the largest region in Spain: Castilla y León.

Upon reaching Segovia, we will take a short driving tour to enjoy impressive views and take photos.

We will then head to the top of the hill to visit the Alcazar castle. From the castle, we will begin a walking tour on which we will explore the gems of this medieval town:

The Alcazar: a drawbridge over a deep moat is the way to access this old fortress. Used as a residence until the 16th century it later became a prison, and then a military school. Beautiful ceilings made of wood decorate most of its rooms.

The Cathedral: Its construction started in 1525 in late Gothic style and some parts of it were brought from an earlier cathedral that was demolished during the “Comuneros War”. The inside is very harmonious, with outstanding organs and an interesting choir.

The Jewish Quarter: In the 15th century, Segovia’s Jewish population was forced to live together in the area which today is still called the Jewish Quarter. The 15th century marked a period of prosperity. A Jewish Segovian named Abraham Senneor became treasurer of the Kingdom of Castile. Today, his house is a Jewish museum.

The Calle Real is the main street in the historic district. Along it, we can admire beautiful noble residences and houses with the local “esgrafiado” decoration on their façades. This is a shopping area for locals.

San Martin Square is probably the most beautiful square in Segovia. The Church of San Martin represents one of the best examples of Romanesque churches from the 13th century in town.

The Roman Aqueduct is the most attractive monument in the city. Built at the beginning of the 2nd century, at the period of Roman Emperor Trajan, its function was to supply water to the city from a natural spring in the mountains, 9 miles southeast of Segovia. It is one of the best-preserved aqueducts in the world. No visitor can leave the city without having their picture taken in front of it!

On this tour you will have the chance to sample delicious local cuisine at one of Segovia’s many traditional restaurants.
