THE REINA SOFIA MUSEUM OF MODERN ART

It is one of the three museums which make up the “Art Walk” in Madrid

The Permanent Collection contains works showing the development of 20th century art in Spain through the Spanish Civil War (1936-1939). Pablo Picasso, Salvador Dalí and Joan Miró are the leading painters in this museum.

The area dedicated to the Spanish Civil War is focused on the great “Guernica”, painted by Pablo Picasso in 1937 for the Spanish Pavilion of The Paris World Fair. A revolutionary painting that expresses the horror and cruelty of war. There are also movies, pictures, magazines, posters and works on display, to offer a complete insight into the time when the Guernica was conceived.

Among the legacies left to the Museum, one of the most important is the fifty-six works left by Salvador Dalí in his will in 1982. “The Endless Enigma”, “Girl at the Window” or “The Great Masturbator” are some of his most famous paintings.
