The Royal Palace in Madrid is the largest in Western Europe. It was the official residence of the Spanish monarchs for near 200 years. It is a living museum as it is still used today for official events by the Spanish king. We will admire its official rooms, among them, the gala dining room (where state dinners take place) and the magnificent Throne Room, besides the Royal Armory which is one of the best in the world.
The Royal Palace has preserved all its furniture, chandeliers, wall silks and other unique ornamental objects in very well conditions. Everything you see is original.
King Philippe V, the first Bourbon king of Spain, commissioned the best architects in Europe to design his new residence after the fire that had completely destroyed the old Alcazar in 1734. Juvarra, Sachetti and Sabatini worked, one after the other, for 26 years to accomplish this large Palace. Great painters like Giambattista Tiepolo and Rafael Mengs decorated the ceilings with fantastic frescoes, and some of the masterpieces exhibited at the Prado Museum were hanging in its rooms.
